Female Pre-subscribers to a Hasidic Work? 1933 Lev Aryeh
In 1933, the Novominsker Rebbe published the first edition of his Lev Aryeh, 11 years after his arrival in the United States. At the end of the volume appears a list of prenumeranten or pre-subscribers who paid in advance for a copy of the book. While the use of prenumeranten to fund a book was widespread in this period, this volume contains two separate lists. The first is the expected male pre-subscribers, the second list, separated from the first, details 30 names of women who purchased a copy of this book in advance. The names contained appear to be of American Jews, the author residing in Williamsburg, Brooklyn at the time of publication.
